9/11 monument sends ‘defiant message’ to terror
September 11th Anniversary: “There’s nothing more American than giving Terror the finger,” says artist Norman Krull who designed the Ground Zero monument, unveiled today ahead of Sunday’s tenth anniversary of the tragedy.
Though ‘the Bird’, as it has already come to be known, was selected amidst controversy and infighting, it seems that New Yorkers are generally satisfied with this striking addition to their famous skyline.
“If it were possible for the hand to be holding a gun that shot terrorist-seeking missiles every hour, on the hour, then I’d want that,” says taxi driver Mick McDonald.
“But that’s life. You can’t have everything. I myself have to make do with one testicle.”
Visitors will be able to enter the hand and travel up the extended finger before looking out through the fingernail at the spectacular view.
“We considered many ideas,” Mayor Bloomberg told NBC’s Today programme. “But in the end we went for the directness, the simplicity, the truth of Norman’s concept. ‘Fuck you, Terror!’ – what else is there to say?”
