Google buys $1 billion of VHS tapes

Tech News: After Facebook’s acquisition of the photo site Instagram, Google has announced plans to buy $1 billion worth of VHS tapes, in a further bid to cash in on nostalgia.

“Modern tech-savvy consumers have a real thirst for stuff that looks cosmetically old,” said Google spokesman Todd Sweetride. “While Instagram has the retro-photo market covered, Google will invest a billion dollars in VHS tapes in a bid to capture the video-nostalgia market.”

All existing and future YouTube content will be transferred to VHS, and users of the site will have to ‘rent’ any clips they want to see – the requested tape will then be posted to them within seven days.

“Each clip will be viewable around 30 times before the picture quality goes downhill, or the tape gets chewed up in your VCR,” said Sweetride. “It’ll give a charming retro feel to clips – evoking warm, fuzzy memories of youth.”

“And of course, there will be heavy fines for users who do not rewind the tapes after viewing.”
