More people have died from selfies than shark attacks this year

Twelve people have died while taking selfies this year, while eight deaths have been caused by shark attacks, reports Mashable.

The BBC reports that a Japanese tourist has died after allegedly slipping down the stairs while taking a selfie at India’s Taj Mahal monument.

Other selfie deaths this year include the Texas teenager who died after trying to take an Instagram selfie while holding a loaded gun to his head, three Indian students who died trying to take a “daredevil selfie” close to an oncoming train and the two men who died in the Ural mountains as they pulled the pin from a hand grenade to take a selfie.

The sad but serious summary seems to be that sharks aren’t the problem – staring at a phone screen and not looking where you’re going is.
