9 year old boy’s letter to Justin Bieber correcting his grammar goes viral

This letter from a boy in Cornwall to Justin Beieber has now been shared around the world and we love it because it’s copping massive snark at Justin

I am writing to you to raise an issue about your song ‘Boyfriend’, which you released in 2012.

In the song, you can be heard – on a number of occasions – stating ‘If I was your boyfriend’: here you have clearly used the subjunctive mood incorrectly.

The correct lyrics should, in fact, be ‘If I were your boyfriend’.

This is a very common mistake made by the general public today; however, if role models (and popular singer/song-writers) such as you cannot use it, why should we make the effort to study and use such grammatical forms correctly?

You may reply to this by stating that such grammar inaccuracies are not of any importance. I strongly disagree.

As an Upper Key Stage Two pupil, currently studying hard for my Punctuation and Grammar test, I find it incredibly disappointing that you are unable to follow what is considered to be the basics of the English language.

My final point is this: If current performers, such as Beyonce can write a song using the subjunctive mood correctly, so must you.

The letter was shared by his teacher Louise Williams who writes, “Please like/share this letter written by a pupil from my year 5/6 class, in South West Cornwall. They want to see how far it will travel and whether we can get a response!”

So far it’s been to the USA, Australia and even the West Midlands

Here’s hoping it reaches Justin himself
