“We have ways of making you talk louder”. New BBC drama SS-GB criticised for mumbling
New BBC drama SS-GB – “what would it have been like if the Germans had won the war” and all that – has become the latest BBC drama to be criticised for its poor sound quality.
Like Jamaica Inn a few years back and Tom Hardy’s Saturday night gruntfest Taboo, viewers said they couldn’t understand much of what Sam Riley’s lead character was saying.
Here’s what they had to say on Twitter, plus some of our favourite responses to the new BBC1 show.
Missed the first episode of #SSGB?
Here's what you need to know:

I would have understood more if there'd actually spoken in German. #SSGB

What we've learned from SS-GB is that, if the Nazis had successfully invaded Britain, everyone would whisper everything. #ssgb

I'm an actor in need of a break. If you hire me, I promise I won't constantly mumble on a top BBC drama. #ssgb

Turning the volume to the max for #ssgb to hear the dialogue is fine but then the background music kicks in and it's like …. pic.twitter.com/HIXuzYYsnX

I'm getting more entertainment from following the #SSGB hashtag than the actual show

And some of those other tweets.
Right then. #SSGB. Bit of escapist fun about a once-democratic nation run by an unhinged right-wing tyrant to take my mind off… oh.

And spare a thought for this chap.
Well its literally started with dreadful inaccuracies. That was a Spitfire Mk IX in the opening scene. Not introduced until 1943. #SSGB

Maybe this is the cause of all those sound issues.
My thesis – flatscreen TVs & tablets have shit sound. Everyone has a flatscreen TV or a tablet. Ergo "mumbling" on the rise #SSGB
