Punked! Donald Trump supporters fooled into waving Trump-branded Russian flags
Lots of people have been pointing out that the red, white and blue flags being waved by Donald Trump supporters at the conservative CPAC lovefest looked, well, a little familiar.
Those pro-Trump flags at CPAC look a lot like Russian tricolors. pic.twitter.com/IdBnxx2QbG

They were basically Trump-branded Russian flags.
Russian flag on left. Trump flag at CPAC on right. Nothing to see here. #CPAC2017 #russia @realDonaldTrump pic.twitter.com/druOBp8eUS

Crowd at CPAC waving these little pro-Trump flags that look exactly like the Russian flag. Staffers quickly come around to confiscate them. pic.twitter.com/YhPpkwFCNc

It prompted outrage and disbelief on social media, as you would expect.

People okay with waving a Russian flag because it’s branded Trump is a pretty great metaphor for the current state of conservatism.

Except was it in fact a brilliant stunt by an anti-Trump protestor keen to, ahem, flag up the regime’s close ties with Russia’s president Putin? Could be…
Oh, credit can now be given. This guy is the genius who tricked dumb conservatives into waving Russian flags with “Trump” on them. pic.twitter.com/va1RHvXmGR

UPDATE: The two protestors responsible have been named as Jason Charter and Ryan Clayton who handed out around 1,000 Trump emblazoned red, white and blue striped flags.
Charter stood up during Trump’s official remarks to accuse him of being a “fascist” and “Putin’s puppet” and both were ejected from the premises.
Here is Clayton at the conference with a big version of the flag.

“I think there are multiple ways you can resist against Trump, and I think this is one way that’s extremely effective,” Charter told The Atlantic. “It’s fun to have a joke sometimes in a very serious situation.”
As you can imagine, Twitter couldn’t get enough of it.
Nothin' says GOP patriotism like chantin' USA!, USA! while waivin' Russian flags. #TrumpRussia pic.twitter.com/fhvFbBowgo
