This American mum’s bill for having her baby will make you value the NHS even more than you already did
You already know healthcare isn’t cheap in the US and yet this new mum’s bill for having a baby still takes the breath away.
Especially the $39 (£29) charge for ‘skin to skin after C-section’. Which is basically, holding your baby.

Makes you appreciate the NHS even more than we already did. And just a few of the things people were saying about it.
It reads like something from an exaggerated dystopian story where you think the author went a little overboard

I hope he’s a really good kid.

My tired brain:
Mother: Can I please hold my baby?
Dr: Sure, but it’ll cost ya.
Mother: What–
Father: How much?
Dr: $39.35
Father: $20
Dr: Sir, this is non-negotiable
Father: …$25?
Mother: Richard, just pay the man —
Father: It’s a matter of principle, Monica— Benetnasch (@alkaid_proof) 8 March 2019
how do you get 79 units of c-section
— Chaotic_Century_ED_2.mp3.exe (@ChaseStarB) 8 March 2019
That’s probably how many minutes?
— Lorca Damon (@LorcaDamon) 8 March 2019
A c-section is cheaper per minute than holding the baby per minute then?

And people shared their own stories.
I had back surgery in 07, luckily had good insurance.
Hospital charged me/insurance 90 bucks PER PILL to give me my own epilepsy medication. As in, I brought the meds and the nurse handed them to me.

20 years ago I was charged $7.50 for an “oral rehydration system”. Which turned out to be a mini-can of ginger ale.

My friend had a $25k delivery, we ran the numbers — would’ve actually been cheaper to fly first to the Four Seasons Bora Bora and do a home birth + recovery in one of their suites. It’s INSANE.
