Ann Widdecombe compared being in the EU to slavery and these 8 takedowns were brutal
Over the past week or so, we’ve seen the entire cohort of Brexit Party MEPs turn their backs during the EU anthem, as well as Lib Dem MEPs wearing Bollocks to Brexit T-shirts in the European Parliament. Some other Brexit MEPs complained about *checks notes* having to catch trains and being given a work laptop.
If we thought that must surely be as much embarrassment as the UK would have to endure in a week, we were sadly mistaken.
"Slaves against their owners. The peasantry against the feudal barons. Colonies… against their empires. And that is why Britain is leaving."
In a speech to the European Parliament Ann Widdecombe compared Brexit to slaves achieving freedom: https://t.co/QP6uZeA3Aq pic.twitter.com/5MW3FKTtHV

Yes, that’s newly elected Brexit Party MEP, Ann Widdecombe comparing being a member of the European Union with slavery.
This is how people reacted – brace yourselves.
1.
It is grossly offensive to equate the experience of slaves with that of British citizens being part of the EU. It illustrates a total lack of understanding of the appalling, brutal nature of slavery, nevermind ignorance of how the EU works and the benefits membership brings. https://t.co/HABB22ofDz

It’s so fucking embarrassing that we’re represented in the EU by people who think fishing mesh regulations we have a say in are on par with fucking *slavery* https://t.co/iCeFA4egbt

The evil EU is OPPRESSING Ann Widdecombe by inflicting a CRUEL monthly salary of £6127, £4000 in office expenses, plus travel, attendance, and – BITTER BLOW! – two-thirds of all her medical expenses. https://t.co/ueLx6xR2VP

Quite something having Ann Widdecombe complain bitterly about the democratic elections of the new leaders of the EU Commission when her own leader was elected to lead her party by who, exactly?
Oh wait. It was by nobody. He’s self appointed.
As you were, everyone.

Ann Widdecombe – elected to the EU by … an electorate … rants against the undemocratic EU.
Ann's party meanwhile has no membership… no NEC and a leader who has literally… appointed himself…. making it the least democratic party in the UK https://t.co/CpUPrENaQL

Ann Widdecombe is Brexit in human form.
Outmoded, deluded, embarrassing and totally unaware of the damage she causes to the country she professes to care about. pic.twitter.com/o8XXHZf7i1

The Brexit Party often claim they represent the British people.
Maybe I'm just a traitor, but I like to think we're generally better than Ann Widdecombe delivering an unhinged diatribe in the manner of your mad old aunt after getting drunk on turpentine.pic.twitter.com/ys7ZwiukyJ

She was a ghastly bigot 20 years ago when she blighted the Conservative Party’s frontbench. She is a ghastly bigot now that she blights the Brexit Party. The only good argument for a No Deal Brexit is that it would send Ann Widdecombe back into retirement. https://t.co/QqffeQQKCO

Newsnight’s Emma Barnett, who is taking no sh_t these days, questioned the MEP about her rant.
"Slaves never got paid £3,900 a month did they?"
Earlier today, Brexit Party MEP Ann Widdecombe compared Brexit to slaves rising up against their owners. https://t.co/tahfO1JHgX
She tells @EmmaBarnett it's the British people who are oppressed, not MEPs#newsnight pic.twitter.com/t2YKtbwaKd

“You don’t seem very oppressed to people sitting at home looking at you.”
You tell her, Emma.
