Our 9 favourite reactions to Bette Midler’s question about an art gallery photo
Bette Midler is one of those celebrities who constantly calls out Donald Trump and we tip our hats to her for that, but we aren’t too sure where she was going with this question, although we have our suspicions.

It looks as though the actor and singer has a problem with the people in the photo looking at their phones instead of at the works of art in the gallery. She got a lot of replies, but probably not the one she wanted; these are our favourites.

they're sitting there minding their business and some strange woman is taking their photo without consent and posting it to millions of followers on the internet? https://t.co/5dp4CJDdBV

That the Boomer doesn't realize the museum in question has an app that teaches the history of all the works in the museum because they can't afford staff members to teach people anymore due to budget cuts since museums are a "waste of taxpayer money" according to Boomers. https://t.co/g5NSAjkNk3

i have a degree in baroque art and i spend half my time in galleries on my phone
compare contemporaries, check bios, insta the work, or just USE YOUR PHONE bc art is made to hang out w u while u go about the business of your life, and make its mundanities more beautiful https://t.co/TTplP7Aqqk

They're bored at the Eurocentricity and lack of diversity at galleries, so they're looking for relatable memes on their phone. I do the same. https://t.co/Jc8dtdqfqE

nothing. there is no moral obligation to stare at art the entire time you're in a museum. museums are often expensive to get into, maybe they're there all day and taking a break between looking. anyway, stop shaming young folk. – xoxo an art historian & museum professional https://t.co/BJNlY6JQjX

Nothing is wrong with this picture since we don’t know what the backstory is. They could be contacting their parents after spending hours there. They could be reading about the history of the art on the museums website. We assume too much if we’re upset by this.

That 98% of the art hung in that gallery is by men

You should’ve centered these ladies, maybe asked them to spread out evenly on the bench, bent down so the painting in the back is level, brightened the photo, adjusted for saturation & a little ambiance, & decreased contrast. I suggest Snapseed or VSCO. It takes practice Bette.
