Simply 25 of the most memorable memes of the decade

It’s in the nature of memes that they’re absolutely everywhere one week and cast aside like a recording of a Jimmy Savile Top of the Pops the next.

Once they’re consigned to history’s bin, it can be quite difficult to even bring them to mind, so a trip down Meme-ory Lane can be quite the revelation.

These were some of the biggest memes of the last decade, according to Buzzfeed. See how many you can recall.

1. That moth

Based on a Reddit picture of a moth, it was everywhere in 2018.

2. The sign-holding Twitter rabbit

Somebody did the hard work on this, but the rest of us have been doing the old copy and paste for years.

3. Planking

In 2011, people were just lying straight across stuff at every opportunity, and getting their mates to snap the proof.

4. Kim Kardashian’s oily arse

This late 2014 attention-seeking pose on Paper magazine almost actually broke the internet, with people photo-editing her into weird scenarios – like being famous for being famous.

5. Alex from Target

Another one from 2014, featuring Alex, a store assistant from target whose photo was lifted from Tumblr and was subsequently perved over by all the under-20s, because that’s a normal one.

6. First-world problems

A 2010 obsession with undermining people’s fears if they seemed to be trivial, it became a common troll accusation across social media.

7. The Kylie Jenner lip challenge

By creating a vacuum in a glass, the meme-obsessives of 2015 were theoretically making their lips look like the silicon-plumped mouth of Kylie Jenner. It didn’t work.

8. Sad Keanu

A 2010 paparazzi snap of the actor eating a sandwich turned into a photoshop challenge, and Sad Keanu passed into legend.

9. The Ice Bucket Challenge

Started in 2014 to raise funds for and awareness of the debilitating and fatal condition, ALS, the ice bucket challenge went viral and was taken on by hundreds of celebrities, making a small fortune for charity.

10. What Does the Fox Say?

The one-hit wonder by Ylvis was so omnipresent during 2013, most people hated it with in 48 hours, if they hadn’t taken a shortcut and hated it instantly.

11. *record scratch* *freeze frame* Yup, that’s me. You’re probably wondering how I ended up in this situation.

This 2016 mockery of a film cliché achieved a life of its own and is still a thing on Twitter, if not with quite the same frequency as when it first broke.

12. The Mannequin Challenge

Another blast from the past that is 2016, this was another staying still meme, like planking, but it involved being filmed staying so still you looked like a mannequin. Hours of fun.

13. Salt Bae

2017’s obsession with the way Turkish chef Nusret Gökçe salted meat led to him becoming an internet celebrity and being photoshopped into everything. They should see how I add ketchup.
