I have no idea why the Tories are so obsessed with having Latin taught.
I did it to A Level. I can occasionally translate things on tombs. That’s it.

Hmm. It’s elite because only people who are guaranteed successful careers thanks to family connections, can afford to waste time on a subject whose only practical application is in understanding some of the dialogue in Asterix books… https://t.co/VefZPKHsXC

At least our children will be able to ask where the NHS went in Latin.

I remember a time that I visited a pub in Oxford, everyone was speaking English but when I walked in, they all started speaking Latin instead. pic.twitter.com/GPqTYsYN2y

Learning Latin can be useful, but state school pupils would have a better chance in life if they became fluent in bullshit, of the kind that’s taught at Eton.

Not everyone was against the idea, and many cautioned against whataboutery. Dominic Minghella was more concerned about their motives.
There's nothing wrong with offering Latin in schools per se, of course. But I hope you'll forgive my skepticism of the government's bona fides. There's at least a prima facie case for thinking they're just stoking their culture war. After all, what have this mob ever done for us?

A final measured thought from historian and author, Greg Jenner.
I see we have extended the culture war to learning Latin. There’s loads of good work being done to make Classics more accessible, and it’s not hugely helpful when people dunk on it
