Just when people might most want Boris Johnson to be at the mercy of journalists and the opposition, he has a legitimate excuse to leave the fray – the birth of his (probably) eighth child, his second with Carrie Johnson.

We’re pleased to learn of the healthy outcome for mother and baby and offer our congratulations.
Naturally, Johnson will take paternity leave, almost certainly hoping that Partygate will somehow blow over while he’s begging donors for money for a nanny changing nappies.
