This school’s outrageous Mother’s Day song had the entire internet hollering into next week
It’s Mother’s Day on Sunday and schools up and down the country are helping pupils make cards and gifts and even sing songs about it, it turns out.
But let’s hope not too many schools are asking their children to sing this particular Mother’s Day song, which went wildly viral after it was shared by @sophie_e_hill over on Twitter.
my 5-year-old niece was given this song to sing for Mothers’ Day at her CofE primary school… 🤢 pic.twitter.com/T76I4oP6P5

And just in case that’s tricky to read, here it is again in full.
We don’t know where to begin, but fortunately these people did, just a few of the many responses it prompted.
1.

My Mum’s one in a million
This song’s a ruddy farce
She’s coming to school tomorrow
To stick it . . .— Kate Harrison (@kateharrison52) March 23, 2022

And people wonder how bias comes in early. This is grim. https://t.co/0kq8WpM5Ct

She’s got more than one degree/she fights for human rights/which matters more to me.
She moans about the cleaning/she’s always on just-eat/she can’t cook for toffee/and she bought my school fair cake.

“My Mum’s one in a million
I’m sure you will agree
But this song is coming atcha,
Direct from 1863…”— Donna Rees. (@DonnaARees) March 24, 2022

My mum's ever so clever,
She may not have a degree
Actually she has seven
And is the Regius Professor of History https://t.co/ZkcBT5dNk7— Kate (@Staywithkate_) March 24, 2022

Write your own!
“”My school’s really regressive
And that’s super weird
Cause my dad’s pretty progressive
and knows how to make our tea.
I know my mom’s not an angel
She’s woman just like I’ll be
Her life is more than cooking and cleaning
And more is also what’s in store for me”— Dr. Ann Olivarius (@AnnOlivarius) March 24, 2022

Our primary school had this one. It was sung at an assembly I went to. My husband wrote in to make it clear he did not want this message going to our daughters or any other child and they said it would never be sung again. I wasn’t calm enough to write in 😆 https://t.co/R1PtOPQHc0

I work with so many amazing women – brilliant scientists & caring mothers who change the world every day.
But although this example is obviously outrageous, similar subtle social cues are everywhere – and we wonder why many boys grow up to expect this from their wives.#Feminism https://t.co/F2e7njD8W9— David K Smith (@professor_dave) March 24, 2022
Not everyone hated it.
“She may not have a degree” is just saying thanks Mum for giving up your hopes and dreams for me. It isn’t saying Mums don’t ever have degrees. It isn’t saying they shouldn’t. It’s a fact Women do all this stuff & give up so much. Why eradicate that from discourse? Be thankful!

Except …
Hello Sam, the 1950s are calling! Let’s have a celebratory song which is a bit more relevant to modern parenthood and doesn’t perpetuate the myth that motherhood is sacrifice, and baking, and unfulfilled dreams and that everyone is happier for it.
— Hannah (@dottydesignsuk) March 24, 2022
To conclude …
I hate literally everything about this song https://t.co/VTCOTOwUxR
