This Labour MP’s speech on Boris Johnson and undermining democracy was magnificently done
MPs will vote today on whether there should be an inquiry into whether Boris Johnson misled Parliament.
Johnson won’t be there, of course, he’s gone to India in the hope of securing a trade deal by the end of the year.
Whether he’s still PM at that time is another matter, with the odds on him going surely shortening after former Brexit minister Steve Baker just said it was time for Johnson to go.
BREAKING: Senior Tory Steve Baker calls on Boris Johnson to quit. 💥
"I'm sorry, that for not obeying the letter and the spirit…. the Prime Minister now should be long gone. I'll certainly vote for this motion but he should just know that the gig's up".

But we’re not here for Baker, we’re here for this speech by Labour MP Chris Bryant, an impassioned plea for MPs to preserve the reputation of the House of Commons and to uphold democracy.
You don’t have to be the member of any particular party to be moved by this, two minutes very well spent.
Superb speech by @RhonddaBryant.

Magnificently done. And here was a section of it highlighted by the Rhondda MP himself.

And just a few of the things people were saying about it.
Chris. You made me PROUD this afternoon. I’m 76 always interested in politics. Recently, I have felt besmirched by this government and not proud to be English.
Your speech lifted me out of that slough of despond.
You are an honourable man. I’m glad my politics match yours

Strange how when the PM is away parliament and debate suddenly becomes grown-up and sensible?

He's brilliant.
Calmy and logically explaining, in inarguable terms, why Boris Johnson can't continue.
It's fitting that Johnson isn't there today. It's like the infuriating kid has been sent to his room so the grown-ups can talk properly.#JohnsonOut https://t.co/w0dcnl2CnR— Phil Harrison (@MrPMHarrison) April 21, 2022
Brilliant performance from @RhonddaBryant in the Commons. Calm, forensic and very well presented. pic.twitter.com/Ge9fLyVKvh

Full credit to @RhonddaBryant for the way he’s conducted himself during this whole debate.
He’s been the opposite of how Johnson has conducted himself.
He’s kept away from blatant partisanship, been clear & coherent in his thinking & stuck to the facts.
Good for democracy.

He’s a legend. So much stature, honour and integrity – I wish he was my MP.
