about ten years ago I was heading to JFK late at night on the A train and forgot my suitcase on the platform at 59th St as I boarded. a group of guys on the platform formed a human chain to throw the suitcase to each other and then onto the train right before the doors closed.

Same in NYC when I was a tiny 22 year old. Lady passed out on crowded N train in the morning. Suddenly there was a whole empty bench, folks got her situated, the ladies with the big black purses pulled out hankies and water and sprung into action. Made me feel so much safer.

I was at a store walking behind a dad and, trailing slightly behind him, his daughter carrying a balloon. The kid walks square into a support beam, i catch the balloon before it gets lost.
Kid starts crying. Dad turns around and sees a strange man holding his kids balloon.

I live in the south. My windshield wiper motor came off in a summer rainstorm. Stopped at a store looking for a clothes hanger to tie it back on. Older white gentleman took me to his house and fixed it in garage and didn’t take a penny. Humanity still exist.

In Edinburgh when I was 21, I looked left, then started to step into the street. A strong, gray-haired woman grabbed the back of my jacket and yanked me back just as a bus whizzed by from the right. She didn’t even really look at me. Saved my life and kept right on walking.

I grew up in NYC. One day I was walking to school, maybe I was 12, my Dad had died a couple of years before, life was dark and I was depressed, and I looked over my shoulder and saw a young woman smiling an encouraging smile at me from the back of a bus.

When I was 19, -45 years ago, I was standing on a street corner in Berlin, trying to see from my map which way to walk to meet up with my friends. Just as I figured it out, an elderly woman asked if I needed help. When I politely declined..1/n

she recognized my accent as American & insisted on walking me across the park. She said the Berlin food drops saved their lives & she had been waiting for a chance all this time to do a favor for an American. It was a slow walk, but I’m so glad I let her help
