21 savage responses to the UK’s sewage crisis – number two will leave you furious
In October 2021, Tory MPs faced a backlash from constituents after voting against a Lords amendment to the Environment Bill that would have made water treatment companies culpable for sewage spillages into open water.
Frankly it was a deplorable vote and these MPs should be ashamed of themselves. Sewage vote outcry prompts Tory MPs to defend decision on social media | Pollution | The Guardian https://t.co/i4WXf3JB6y

They effectively gave the green light to polluters. Or the brown light.
The results of that vote have been only too plain to see – and smell, if you’re in the vicinity – with an apparent increase in sewage contamination incidents.

All of them, all of them, @DefraGovUK, @Ofwat, @EnvAgency and @SouthernWater should hang their heads in shame and by God do they have a lot to answer for.
Every beach in East Sussex between Brighton and Hastings has now been issued with a sewage alert.https://t.co/YoK2sfiEny

Some environmental laws are more equal than others.
If you leave a dog poo on the coast it’s a £1000 fine for you.
If you’re a water company and you want to pump millions of litres of raw sewage onto the beach and into the sea – no problemo, Tory MPs will vote to allow you to do this. pic.twitter.com/wOUBkKhRvs

Some reports suggest a combination of a shortage of lorry drivers and an increase in the price of treatment chemicals, both exacerbated by Brexit, led to the rise in water pollution.
This govt is scared of water companies dumping sewage exposing that due to Brexit they can’t get hold of chemicals needed to treat raw sewage… So the govt turn a blind eye while the sewage dumps into our waters increase by (and this is incredible) 2,900% in 5 years.

Six weeks ago, Govt said polluters could dump risky sewage into rivers because Brexit disrupted water treatment chemical supply chains…
…so now that’s what they are doing. And Govt votes to facilitate it.

For the second time, voters have been naming and shaming those MPs who voted down the amendment.
This is my local MP, Tory Fiona Bruce.
She voted to allow the continuation of raw sewage being poured into our rivers and seas. There is now not a single river, stream or lake in England that meets the official "good health" standard.

Sewage being pumped into our seas by businesses making enormous profits while Tories call for *less* regulation of business sums up the state of the nation.

Apparently sewage spills since 2016 have lasted a total of nine million hours, which is about as long as a Tory leadership hustings seems when you sit through it!

There is a lot of sh*t floating about in our rivers and sea. If you want to know who’s done it, ask your Tory MP.
