The Tories’ rising culture warrior claims Labour wants to nationalise children – 15 favourite responses

Miriam Cates MP is making quite a name for herself, somehow managing to combine the worst attributes of Jacob Rees-Mogg, 30p Lee and Nadine Dorries in her determination to wage the culture war.

The backbencher’s allegiences lie with Tory lobby groups the New Social Covenant Unit, the Common Sense Group, and now the newly formed New Conservatives. That’s a lot of new, but her talking points are exactly what you’d expect from the Tory right.

She wants to cut immigration.

She thinks that the UK’s low birthrate should be the government’s top priority and wants tax changes to make childbirth and stay-at-home mothering a more attractive prospect.

As a ‘devout Christian’, she voted against laws to promote equality and giving free meals to poor children during the school holidays. As Jesus famously said “Don’t feed hungry kids. Their parents should have worked harder.”

Tweeters largely treated it with the scorn it deserved.

Her latest hottest of hot takes appeared in the Telegraph.

We’re just relieved she isn’t indulging in conspiracy theories bordering on the hysterical in response to Labour wanting more highly qualified Early Years teachers.
