This percentages maths hack is blowing 100% of people’s minds everywhere
Here’s a maths hack that we reckon you’ll wish you’d have learned back in the day. And when we say ‘back in the day’ we mean when you were at school.
It went viral after it was shared by the good people of @todayyearsoldig on Twitter for reasons which will become apparent.
Why didn’t my math teachers ever teach me this…it’s so easy to see pic.twitter.com/uwEAej0gDy

Just in case you wondered how this works …
If you want to know why it works, it's because 90% = 0.9, which can be represented as 9 x 10^-1. Meanwhile, 80 = 8 x 10^1. Since each is multiplied by 10 to some power, you just add the powers. 10^-1 + 10^1 gives you 10^0. Thus, you can multiply (9 x 1) x (8 x 1).
If you want…

This person thought they spotted a flaw.
Cool.
Do 15% of 55 and we see.

Except …
1.5 x 5.5 = 8.25
15% of 55 = 8.25— Dr. B. (@DCdoctr) July 31, 2023
Some people still weren’t impressed.
Because it's a limited-use shortcut that doesn't replace actual knowledge of how to calculate percentages.
