Was this the ‘coldest moment in TV history’? It could be
Between June 2007 and December 2009 – thanks, Google – British viewers were treated to the phenomenon that was Golden Balls.
Absolutely nothing to do with David Beckham, the Jasper Carrott-hosted game show saw contestants either reveal the potential prize money inside their own golden ball, or they could lie, before finalists eventually got to face off over the total of the last two balls.
This clip explains better than any paragraph how the final showdown worked. It really was brutal.

Tweeters were split over the ethics at play, with some respecting her tactics and others hoping she choked on the money.
That’s really awful and really funny at the same time

I get the point is to win the game but I couldn’t look myself in mirror for a long time if I did that to someone.

The fact she got dragged for this is crazy. It’s a game show, you play to win. She killed it! https://t.co/JdYgrFapqi

You’re not wealthy until you can choose split every time without feeling any regret over this outcome. https://t.co/dY1lNIXiKl

Mathematics entered the chat.
Basic game theory is to make the choice that gives you the best position regardless of what your opponent does. There is literally no incentive to Split: if your opponent Splits, you’re down 50%; if your opponents Steals you get nothing and would have lost nothing by Stealing. https://t.co/JcmQ73wfVR
