The Education Secretary claiming children prefer portacabins to their classrooms wasn’t the gotcha she thought – 15 ‘See me!’ notes
If she weren’t so directly involved in the education and life chances of children, Education Secretary Gillian Keegan would be endlessly entertaining.
As it is, her ratio of gaffe to speech is tempered by the news that even more schools are in a dangerous condition due to RAAC, and many children are currently having lessons in temporary buildings.
She addressed this in a Commons response.
"The portacabins are very very high quality"
Education Secretary Gillian Keegan says children at a school affected by RAAC were "petitioning" to stay in the portacabins as they "preferred them to the classroom"https://t.co/PAiZ4D1jU3

“In terms of the, er, portacabins, I’ve been to a number of these schools and seen, er, children and met, er, children in the portacabins – and, er, in fact, the first school I went to the children were all petitioning me, er, to stay in the portacabin ’cause they actually preferred it to the classrooms.
So, er, the portacabins are very, very high quality and I would advise the honourable lady to go and see some of the high-quality portacabins that we have – and that is true.”
We’re not sure preferring to study in a glorified shipping container because it’s safer than your school building is that much of a flex – and neither were these people.

Gillian Keegan, after RAAC catastrophe unfolded with 174 schools now registered, told @bphillipsonMP today that “children prefer portacabins”
WHATTTTTT?
Where’s the apology for the unadulterated mess you’re making of these innocent children’s school lives?

I can fucking guarantee you that neither Gillian Keegan's nor Rishi Sunak's kids are being taught in a fucking portacabin.

Gillian Keegan says the portacabins provided to schools with RAAC concrete are "very, very high quality" and the children actually prefer them to their normal classrooms.
Not sure what this says about the .. actual classrooms?

Listen. Your kids aren’t being educated in any old caravan. These are high quality portacabins. And Gillian thinks they’re just great. She’ll have Eton on the phone any minute ordering 12. pic.twitter.com/UmEtziMKrg

As a teacher who spent 7 years of her career teaching in portacabins I can confirm that this is definitely not the case.
Children overwhelmingly prefer decent solid classrooms that are warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
This is typical dishonesty from @GillianKeegan https://t.co/y4lq4JO2WP

The unofficial Portakabin advert begged a very important question.
Maybe the Department for Education could have just relocated to "very very high quality portacabins" instead of spending £32,000,000 doing up their own offices?
