The first election leaders’ debate on ITV threw all the light you’d expect on the choice facing the country on 4 July, and we can only be grateful that Keir Starmer resisted Rishi Sunak’s calls to do one of these things a week.

I think KS roped a dope here, he’s let Sunak throw flurries for 14 rounds and then delivered some points at the end that people remember. It’s classic barrister, sum up with points to leave impression with jury. But does it work in a TV debate where people drift in and out?
