Geoff Hurst’s comedy Bud plug was so far from subliminal it’s hilarious
See if you can spot the beer brand England’s 1966 World Cup final hat-trick hero Sir Geoff Hurst is plugging during this TV news interview about the World Cup.
It’s not entirely ‘blink and you’ll miss it’, in fact it’s entirely the opposite of subliminal in a clip that’s just gone viral on Twitter for reasons which will become bleedin’ obvious.
Hahaha fucking hell Geoff how much did they pay you for that pic.twitter.com/p34CBhL9GR

Well, he did ask (although he’ll presumably be gutted to have missed out on the hat-trick. Maybe that came later).
"A nice glass of Budweiser" I don't think so Geoff

"Guess you could say Adam Wharton is a bud-ing talent …"
"Geoff …"
"No budding from Foden on display, maybe he's more of a bud light …"
"Geoff, please!"

"I think we can dominate the midfield Martin, in the same way the foam from a cool glass of Budweiser can lather on top of the sumptious chilled beer. "

And it took us all the way back to 2006 and this story from the Guardian’s Media Monkey diary section.
‘Monkey’s award for most outrageous product placement at the World Cup goes to Radio 5 Live’s interview with Sir Geoff Hurst, hero of 1966 and “director of football” at a certain high-street burger chain.
“I am delighted to say we are joined by Sir Geoff Hurst!” announced breakfast host Nicky Campbell. “How are you?” “Very well,” replied Sir Geoff. “I am on the banks of the Rhine with the McDonald’s escort programme [plug one], er, the player escort programme [plug two], we are having a great time.”
“Can England do it?” asked Campbell. “I’m lovin’ it!” replied Hurst. And that’s the hat-trick! Hurst then appeared not to hear what a clearly bemused Campbell was saying. Don’t worry Sir Geoff – we’re sure your sponsors heard loud and clear.’
One thing’s for sure, he must be thirsty after all that interviewing. Maybe time for a glass of something?
