This trolling of the Spanish football team was a glorious self-own (and not just because of the result)
As no-one anywhere needs reminding, there was no fairytale ending to England’s Euros adventure although, let’s face it, the best team won (and we’ve rounded up all our favourite reactions here).
We mention it again because there was no end of fighting talk before the game, obviously (in the nicest possible way). But none of the pre-match trolling was quite as memorable as this, from LBC presenter Iain Dale, for reasons which will become obvious.
What contrast between the two teams. Every England player belted out the national anthem with gusto. Not a single Spanish player opened his mouth. pic.twitter.com/mTFV5fTvPl

And see if you can spot the unfortunate schoolboy error. Labour’s Chris Bryant was among the many who did.
You know it doesn’t have words? Or are you being ironic?

Ooof.
And just in case any of that is tricky to read, here it is again, shared by @PTupac who said: ‘I’m sorry. But this has me howling.’
And in answer to the question, here’s how Iain Dale responded to another one of the people who pointed it out …
You do know there are no lyrics to the Spanish national anthem don’t you?
— Steve (@stevepierrie) July 14, 2024
Clearly not!

And also this.
So, ok, I didn’t know the Spanish national anthem doesn’t have lyrics. This means of course that according to Twitter I am the thickest person in the country and should hang my head in utter shame. Hey ho, https://t.co/XLAHWOg8Hx

No shame in not knowing, Iain, but attributing national characteristics on the basis of the anthem as you did isn’t a good look

I didn’t.

Time for a VAR check?
