People have been jokingly suggesting events that were worse than the Chernobyl disaster – 17 explosive comments

There’s no doubting that the 1986 explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear plant was a bit of a big deal. It was such a big deal that the International Atomic Energy Agency gave it 7 out of 7 on the International Nuclear Event Scale. Top marks!

As well as being the worst nuclear disaster in history, it spawned a brilliantly gripping TV programme, Chernobyl. Watch it, if you haven’t already.

Twitter/x user War Monitor asked their followers on the anniversary of the disaster, back in April, if there has ever been a worse event since.

For some reason it’s going viral again now, and the answers would suggest that not everyone is being entirely serious. Which is fine with us – because who wants to think about the serious answers to that question? Not us.

These were our favourite (presumably) tongue-in-cheek responses.
