The Olympics, the Christians and the ‘Last Supper’ parody that wasn’t – 18 gold-medal-winning responses
Mary Whitehouse may be long gone, but it seems her particular brand of outrage is alive and well online.
The admittedly bizarre Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony has got the Christian Right up in arms in general, but one section in particular has really put le chat among les pigeons.
The interpretation of the Greek God Dionysus makes us aware of the absurdity of violence between human beings. #Paris2024 #OpeningCeremony pic.twitter.com/FBlQNNUmvV

Despite the performance – featuring comedy actor and singer Philippe Katerine accompanied by DJ Barbara Butch, several dancers and drag artists – being a nod to Dionysus, God of Partying (to paraphrase), the table reminded people of Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper. Some weren’t happy.
We’re struggling to remember any part of the Bible that says drag queens shouldn’t depict scenes from scripture, but since they weren’t doing that anyway, a lot of people tried to draw attention to the mix-up.

This little misunderstanding is what happens when Christians are always outraged but seldom curious pic.twitter.com/OBGAZAp0SK

It wasn’t “The Last Supper.”
The blue guy rolling around on the table was supposed to be Dionysus, the Greek god of fertility and wine.

There was one other huge fly in the performative outrage ointment, at least where American ‘Christians’ were concerned.
Christians: "We're offended that the Paris Olympics recreated The Last Supper!"

Here’s a little of the enormous reaction from Twitter/X.
1.
You can be offended by a parody of da Vinci’s Last Supper because you revere da Vinci. But if you’re offended because it mocks Christianity, that’s a bit silly because it isn’t actually the Last Supper, it’s a painting, not a fucking selfie.

Hey MAGAs, aren’t you the crew that’s all about doing your own research and whatnot….how come you morons haven’t googled "Feast of Dionysus" to find out that the so-called "Last Supper" you all are crying about isn’t even close to it pic.twitter.com/eqmd45G3k8

If you are not outraged by this, then there is no need to be upset by anything you saw in Paris last night. Social media seeks to divide us and tell us what we should be furious about, don’t be fooled. pic.twitter.com/fSbcnrTsjd

As a Christian, I’m infuriated the Olympics mocked The Last Supper by replacing The Lord and his Apostles with people Jesus would’ve told us to love and respect. pic.twitter.com/NjPl6SOHlw

very shocking & disrespectful to make light of the Feast of Dionysus; deeply offensive to those who have devoted their lives to feasting, drinking, & salacious behavior. https://t.co/WaYrvaMq5L

It would appear that a lot of short-fused religious fanatics have mistaken the Feast Of Dionysus for The Last Supper. Vive la France, motherfuckers! pic.twitter.com/RKhsKFIkCq

One more time: The Last Supper is not a religious symbol.
It's an artist's rendition of a biblical story.
People must be honest and say it's only offense taken because the Paris opening ceremony used drag artists.
