Here’s a lovely Times diary anecdote that’s just gone viral again on Twitter for reasons which will become obvious.

It’s by journalist Patrick Kidd, a story recounted by the late, great John Mortimer, barrister and creator of Rumpole of the Bailey, of course, and it’s surely the funniest payoff you’ll read today.
