To add an s, or not to add an s – 12 best responses to the supermarket debate dividing opinion
A very serious debate has broken out on X over what we should be calling our supermarkets, and shoppers have been strongly divided by this post on @anon_opin
It's Tesco. Not Tescos. Get it right or fuck off to Asda where you belong.

Strong words. These hot takes are at once pedantic and inventive, with some making bizarre assertions which only reflect on the… creativity of their childhood households.

Are you even British if you don't add an S to the supermarket name you shop at, except Waitrose obviously as that wouldn't work. And ERS for ASDA, which is short for Associated Dairies, est. 1949. Told you about my penchant for the origins of retail. https://t.co/pqRQS3AWPf

It’s Tescos, T’Asdas, Morribobs and Sainers.
Not forgetting Aldi and the other Aldi (Lidl)
Waitrose and Ocado are the posh lads who always get called the right name.

The whole debate is probably best summed up by this tweet, which asks the real questions.
I’ve heard people pluralising Tesco’s. As in ‘Tescos’s’ – but you’ve also got people saying ASDA’s, Waitrose’s, LIDLS, and ALDIS.
As a nation, we seem hellbent on pluralising supermarket names, and I think it’s about time we asked ourselves WHY…!
— Dan Summers (@realdansum) July 30, 2024
Why indeed? We’ll leave it to you to ponder.
