‘What ‘improvements’ have actually made British life worse?’ – 23 frustratingly recognisable peeves

14.

‘So-called “anti-homeless” architecture, especially at bus stops and train stations. Not only are you not allowing the least fortunate in society a way to sleep off the pavement (no one WANTS to spend the night sleeping rough), you are also removing seating options for the elderly/disabled/pregnant.

‘It’s a cost-cutting measure, nothing more, and I hate that when I have to wait for a bus for 20 minutes, I have to awkwardly balance on the slightly-tilted-too-narrow bench instead of sitting like a normal human being.’

‘VAR. Football has become painful to watch because of this (as well as the incessant diving!). The free flow of the game has been impacted and sometimes feels like American football.’

‘Self check out – the amount of time it takes to scan/pack with incorrect items in the fricken bagging area, discount codes not working, items not weighing properly… I’d rather pay a real person.’

‘AirBnB has completely fucked up rents in UK holiday destinations by both raising the rates and reducing the number of available rentals.’

‘Vapes. While aimed to help people quit smoking, they seem to be just as dangerous, nicotine-wise, as regular cigarettes.

‘Also, they’re in fun colours and flavours, so young people who would not necessarily smoke cigarettes will vape instead. That’s not mentioning the early devices that just exploded at random.’

‘There are plenty of intensely annoying things to deal with there, but the one thing that cropped up time and again was the new tethered design for bottle caps. The ban on loose caps is designed to tackle plastic waste, which is certainly a noble aim, but, while the environment might be happy about it, British people are not. One comment summed it up succinctly…

‘Pop bottle tops that don’t come off. In the fucking bin with ye.’
