At least you weren’t the sad family whose Dad had thought Betamax was the future and you had about 12 films to choose from while your mates had all the good ones.

When Tom Cruise was in England doing Eyes Wide Shut, he was refused a rental at Blockbuster because he couldn’t produce an ID
So he went to the shelves and got one of his own films. Pointed to the cover, then himself, and, “Look. Its me”

Plus did you ever notice that there was a pizza takeaway next to the video store? So you go order a pizza take 10-15 mins getting your movie and then go back and pick up your pizza. Life was so much simple back then.

Yep, then you’d spend a good 10mins rewinding it to the start and then fast forwarding it past all the trailers and ads. By the time you got to the start of the film your takeaway would be cold.

Got into the habit of fast-forwarding and then rewinding the tape before playing it so that the spools were tidily wound and aligned with the mechanism in our VCR before playing them. And also having to tweak the tracking to get a clear picture on those really early machines.

At the age of 10 I remember getting this with my mate thinking it was a fighting film. Turns out it was about ballet dancers pic.twitter.com/y1fY1I06BA

Yup! As a bunch of red blooded 14/15 year olds we rented “Cruising” starring Al Pacino, based on the cover alone. Thought it was all about motorbikes, hells angels and bloke stuff… let’s say it wasn’t quite what we expected!

Strangely, it was far easier to find something to watch at the video shop than it is to find something worth watching on the three steaming services we have.
