‘Why DON’T you want to have a dog?’ – 17 reasons people are pooh-poohing the idea of pooches

11.

‘Maybe by listing my problems with dogs, it’ll help people understand:

Dog friendly beaches means wet dogs will come up and spray sandy seawater on my and my family as they inevitably run circles around and sniff my toddler. I wouldn’t want to have to manage that.

When trail running, dogs off leash will chase me. Again, don’t want to be that person who yells “don’t worry, he’s friendly” or be constantly on guard.

Holding a warm, smelly bag of dog poop for most of my hike (or just leaving it on the trail for lucky hikers to step in)
dog hair, everywhere

barking at night (we live next to a dog that does this at all hours and it’s horrible)

barking during the day

finding dog friendly hikes or beaches, or hotels, or housing. It’s really limiting

finding a dog sitter whenever we want to travel

spending the time to train a dog, and maybe the dog is troubled and can’t be trained effectively

getting a puppy that’s supposed to be small, but it turns out it’s huge

managing interactions with other, poorly behaved dogs at the dog park or other off-leash areas

I already have a kid with another one on the way – I don’t want to add another dependent

I never had a dog growing up, so I don’t fully appreciate the benefits, and don’t see how they could outweigh the negatives for me personally’

‘They smell, bark too damn much, and I literally wouldn’t be able to do anything without having to find a damn “dog sitter.”’

‘Husband has been bitten more than once by “friendly” dogs. Son has a scar on his nose from a “friendly, family” dog, while a bunch of others were in the room monitoring the situation.’

‘Not a big fan of a pet that requires my assistance to go to the bathroom. I love dogs, but I’ll stick to playing with my neighbour’s/friend’s dogs and having cats in my house.’

‘It’s hard to be spontaneous when you have a pet. And I wouldn’t want to be that person that brings their dog with them every flipping place they go. It’s codependent.’

‘I want less responsibility in life, not more. That and the unconditional love really creeps me out. Like wtf are you excited to see me?!?’

‘As a dog owner and LOVER, thank you for this post. I love my dog with my whole heart but my entire life revolves around him. I wish more people understood how much work owning a dog is before getting one.’
