This fabulous video highlighting ‘movies that take place at roughly the same time’ is a nerdy delight
How much do you think about real events when you’re watching a movie? Not as much as this guy, probably.
Don McHoull, aka Silent Movie GIFs, has been making short videos juxtaposing movies that were set during the same time periods.
Revolutionary France a la Les Misérables, for example, was set while the Wild West of The Alamo was playing out.
Or, did you know that 13 Going On 30 and The Wolf Of Wall Street are both set in 1987? Two very different stories about very different people…
Here’s the first of his compilations of films set concurrent with one another.

It kicks off with Elizabeth: The Golden Age (set in 1587) and Seven Samurai (1588).
The former stars Cate Blanchett as the eponymous Elizabeth I, Queen of England and Ireland, and tells the story of the second half of her reign. The latter is about a group of farmers who hire a samurai to defend them against crop-stealing bandits.
Very different stories. Very different people. Same year – almost.
Before part two, the man behind Silent Movie GIFs has a confession to make. But who cares? This is great content.
This isn’t a GIF, and it doesn’t really have that much to do with silent movies, but I think it’s my favourite thing that I’ve created for this account

Here’s part two, which includes the films mentioned earlier and, a wildcard choice, Snipes-Stallone sci-fi Demolition Man side by side with Jonah Hill’s skate film Mid90s.

The people dig it.
the idea of different stories happening at the same time but filmed by different people at different times with vastly different styles is so appealing thankyou for this

And one user dug up an older comparison of It’s A Wonderful Life and The Godfather. Take a look!
