This infographic of Twitter’s biggest political accounts is shocking – but not surprising
When self-described free-speech absolutist Elon Musk bought Twitter, it was an imperfect site with a racism problem, more trolls than a Norwegian folk tale, and a sideline in sexist harrassment.
It also had a complaints procedure that worked more often than not, many people carrying out the racism, sexism and general trolling were suspended – sometimes permanently – and blue ticks identified those in some way in the public eye, whose identities had been verified to Twitter.
Now, reports to Twitter, or X, of accounts using threats, racism, sexism, harrassment and even glorifying actual Nazism, can be bounced back with a ‘no violation’ message, blue ticks mean someone has paid Elon Musk to get a higher grade of service, and the ‘verified’ accounts’ posts are pushed higher up people’s feeds. Most notably, the owner’s almost incessant posts are inescapable.
An infographic shared by sports billionaire Mark Cuban shows the extent to which Twitter now prioritises Republican voices.
So, if it feels as though you’ve been bombarded by pro-Trump rhetoric, it’s basically true.
Here’s how Bluesky, home of the Twitter escapees, reacted.
