Mark Carney’s epic rebuke of Donald Trump is a devastating watch and the sort of statesmanship he could only dream about
The new prime minister of Canada Mark Carney has delivered a devastating rebuke to Donald Trump as the US president continues to pile on the tariffs and shows no sign of giving up on his ’51st state’ nonsense.
Carney is of course the former governor of the Bank of England and took over from Justin Trudeau at one of his country’s most perilous and frankly bizarre junctures for generations.
And this particular moment from his speech was an epic rebuke of Trump and a devastating indictment of where we have ended up now (and no clues for guessing who is to blame).
Carney: "The old relationship we had with the United States based on deepening integration of our economies and tight security and military cooperation is over." pic.twitter.com/LKYkpO8JD0

The sort of statesmanship Trump could only dream of, not that he aspires to it (or understands what aspires means).
And here are just a few of the many, many responses it prompted.

HOLY SHIT.

It really does feel like we’re watching the ongoing collapse of the Voluntary American Empire, for no better or more coherent reason than “we got bored” https://t.co/cNet1CQE7J

This is one of the biggest own goals in American history. And for what? Literally nothing. Not a single person can even articulate a rational argument how it makes any sense at all. https://t.co/0x6lU8Zpjs

A political centrist who leads a historic ally with a 5,000-mile border that barely needs policing, declares the relationship is no more, two months into the Trump administration. https://t.co/BxsHwuUUqo

I cannot emphasize enough what a remarkable thing it is for any Canadian Prime Mininster — let alone one who is a quintessential member of the country's centrist elite — to talk like this. https://t.co/frdDz7PFEj

This is such self inflicted wound. Canada was one of our closest allies.
Trump has thrown the relationship in the trash can FOR NO REASON. https://t.co/xvtUICvXuJ

Astonishing words to hear from a Canadian prime minister. Within months of taking office, the Trump admin has done lasting damage to core American interests, including continental defence. https://t.co/FsaD8ZYzpR

Just in the interests of balance and all that.
Canada is a woke joke

There’s only one joke in town, and that town’s not in Canada.
