‘What ridiculous things have you come to care about as you’ve got older?’ – 23 terrifyingly middle-aged opinions

‘Tea towels. I feel the same way about them as Charlotte Bartlett did her Mackintosh squares. I think it started when our eldest was a babe and would sick-up everywhere. Now it is a borderline obsession. In my defence… they are very fucking useful!’

‘It pisses me off how the contents of a ‘King’ Pot Noodle appear to have the same mass as those found in a standard Pot Noodle. I reckon the added weight of the ‘King’ is purely down to the bigger size and thickness of the cup, and the amount of noodles is actually the same in both.’

‘TURN OFF THE ELECTRIC FIREPLACE ONCE THE ROOM IS WARM, YOU DON’T NEED IT ON FOR 2+ HOURS EVERY DAY, THE ROOM WILL CONTAIN THE HEAT. I PAY THE BILLS, NOT YOU.

That is all.’

‘People who don’t stop at zebra crossings and reckless Ubereats/Deliveroo drivers and cyclists who go through red lights. I have no problem shouting at them in the middle of the road now.’
Tildatots

17.

‘Shoes. Not interested in style but wearing the right shoes for the task is a huge priority for me. I will silently judge people who are clearly wearing inappropriate footwear for a job.’

‘Land drainage. I became mildly obsessed for a while with how all the ditches on the farmland round here run into each other and on into rivers and streams. Talked for ages with a local farmer about how he handles troublesome boggy fields. Genuinely find it all fascinating.’

‘People picking flowers or shaking blossoms on the trees just to get a few Instagram shots. If we all picked the flowers there would be none left for you to get your perfect Insta shot!’

‘I started noticing the quality of grouting wherever I go. I don’t even work in the that area. Fucking sad.’

‘Sweeping leaves. I live in a road with loads of trees and have a big front garden. Every year I start with my garden, then I go do the bit of the public path outside my garden. I’m so proud of myself, I get carried away and end up sweeping half the street! Of course, I then get angry when others don’t sweep theirs.’

‘People disciplining their children, and table manners. I used to think it was weird how my parents were quite strict about it. Now I see why. If I see people holding a knife like a pen it makes me irrationally angry.’

‘I care so much about illegal parking it scares me. I don’t even own a car.’
