James May’s ‘zen’ approach to driving is something that we would all do well to adopt
I think most of us would agree that of the three former presenters of Top Gear (and The Grand Tour), then it would be James May that we would most like to have a pint with. He just seems like a top bloke – self-effacing, chilled and with no airs and graces.
It’s this calm and unflappable outlook which comes across so brilliantly in this short video in which he gives some tips on how to be a better driver.
It’s a great approach and there are some valuable lessons for all of us who drive.

James May gets it absolutely spot on in this video and honestly it's quite refreshing.
I see a lot of parallels with my own driving. It's the zen method – making progress but not rushing. Just because I'm in a car, it doesn't make me better than anyone who isn't in a car. pic.twitter.com/HfaffjIGvN

Words of wisdom, indeed. Here’s what others made of it.
1.
it's crazy how much I've matured in my driving, and it only happened when I was single for a few years
driving stress-free helps you practice more for when there's stress
tbh, now that I have a faster car, I feel I have even more responsibility than my 03 civic

Just look at how many times Mr May scans to his right you can clearly see what a good driver he is

Remove horns from cars, they serve no practical purpose.

ive always dislike people that use the horn nilly willy… its for emegencies not to use whenever u feel frustrated.. or whenever u wanna say hi to someone… its beyond rude…

Absolutely James. If only that person who beeped knew who they were beeping.

His theory test app was an incredible help when I was learning. The little videos on it were always full of wisdom like this!

Totally, just smile and let it go. You'll never encounter that person again. Get on with your day.

James May was always the sexiest of the three Top Gear hosts. Definitely a whole lot going on.

James May really seems like a class act. Pity more drivers aren't that clued in.

Taking a ‘Captain Slow’ approach to road use (whether driving, riding or walking) is an excellent idea. Lowers your stress levels, reduces conflict with others and you don’t get arrive any later in real terms.
Well done James May!— Semi-OK Boomer (@Ayohugh) March 21, 2025
