A MAGA Republican accused the Biden administration of following the Goebbels playbook, and irony is dead
A House of Representatives foreign relations subcommittee meeting became the crime scene for the murder of irony, this week, as they debated allegations of a ‘censorship industrial complex’ supposedly created by the Biden administration to silence conservative voices.
Nina Jankowicz, the former executive director of the Department of Homeland Security’s Disinformation Governance Board, gave an opening statement which pointed out the irony of such an investigation happening under a Trump-Musk government.
“I want to acknowledge the irony we’re having this discussion as we witness an assault on the First Amendment we have not seen in decades. The Trump administration has directed far more egregious violations of our constitution than the imagined actions of the Biden administration on which this hearing is premised.”
Congressman Keith Self, who went viral after repeatedly misgendering trans congresswoman Sarah MacBride, implied that the Biden administration had been following the Nazi playbook – a hot take guaranteed to further send everyone’s irony meters into overdrive.
Joseph Goebbels was a literal Nazi and one of Hitler's closest allies.
To my Republican colleagues, it is probably best not to quote him during a congressional hearing. pic.twitter.com/qCTXbMEEUJ

“A direct quote from Joseph Goebbels, ‘it is the absolute right of the state to supervise the formation of public opinion’, and I think that may be what we’re discussing here.”
“When you’re quoting Joseph Goebbels, we have a big problem. That’s alarming as hell to me.”
It wasn’t just congresswoman Julie Johnson who was appalled by the reference. Twitter users condemned it, too.

BREAKING: In an alarming moment, GOP Congressman Keith Self decides to quote Hitler's Minister of Propaganda, Joseph Goebbels, to make a point. There is never any reason to quote Goebbels. Ever.pic.twitter.com/eRzGdLDZp3

Quoting Goebbels on the House floor isn’t just tone-deaf—it’s terrifying. Kudos to Rep. Johnson for not letting that slide.

They're not even trying to hide it anymore.
Republican House Rep. Keith Self quotes Joseph Goebbels, the chief propagandist for the Nazi party, in a hearing.

Missing context here, but that's OK. I can't imagine any context where quoting Goebbels would be a good thing. https://t.co/QeaXgZa5OL

This is where the US is right now. Quoting Goebbels on governance? The GOP are lost. https://t.co/HmpTyCnEbp

Republicans quoting Goebbels, who would’ve guessed! It’s SO easy to just… never quote one of the most powerful nazis from the third reich https://t.co/v9YN34WDIL

In his first term, Trump said Hitler "did some good things."
In January, Elon proudly gave a Nazi salute.

Keith Self already proved he is unfit for office at his town hall. The reason he can quote so easily from Goebbels is he admires him and sometimes forgets he’s not talking to Stephen Miller.

Quoting a Nazi is probably not the best move if you don't want to be considered a Nazi. https://t.co/NM1Y4SfMrl

Disappearing people off the streets w out due process for protesting but providing police escorts for Nazi marches, blanket deportations, state sponsored executions of unarmed civilians, killing off social services, and now explicitly quoting Nazis, but definitely not fascist. https://t.co/lVik9tv9ue

It’s not the first time Self has fallen back on his apparent ownership of The Big Book of Goebbels Quotes.
Clearly, the gentleman from Texas has a history of quoting Nazis, specifically Joseph Goebbels. https://t.co/3mbL2rEh7J https://t.co/RUSqoICZuq pic.twitter.com/4IvUjL2WBQ

In 2010, he attacked John Muns, his opponent in the Republican primaries, with the line –
“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.”
In not unrelated news, Congressman Self insists that Trump won the 2020 election.
