This 2014 Nadine Dorries speech on MPs’ responsibilities pushes irony to the very limits
It is now 61 days (at the time of writing) since Nadine Dorries stood down as an MP ‘with immediate effect’. Except …she didn’t.

Such is her outrage at being refused a seat in the House of Lords that she is insisting on remaining in post until she can investigate who blocked her peerage – and why.
We don’t know the who, but we can have a wild guess at why, since the MP for Mid Bedfordshire hasn’t spoken in the House of Commons since the day Boris Johnson stepped down as PM – 7th of July 2022 – and hasn’t set foot in the place for months.
Chris Bryant – "I don't know what you think about the Nadine Dorries thing. I just don't think in an ordinary line of work, if you missed coming in for 6 months, that you'd still be paid, because if you don't turn up for 6 months as a councillor, you're out."#BBCBreakfast pic.twitter.com/7cxhu3qoO3

MPs shouldn't have more than one job, like Lee Anderson. But they also shouldn't have less than one job, like Nadine Dorries.

One MP had some harsh words to say about those who don’t work hard enough for their constituents, and that person was *Wagatha Christie dramatic pause* Nadine Dorries.
2014 Nadine Dorries needs to have a word with 2023 Nadine Dorries. Here she is, arguing that constituents should have "more democratic control" over recalling their MP, saying "where MPs fall down is when they ignore their constituents".
Would be terrible if this went viral. ~AA pic.twitter.com/Vwm26v6TnQ

Tweeters spotted the irony – or hypocrisy.
1.
2014 Nadine Dorries vehemently saying
"where MPs fall down is when they ……"Given her utter lack of regard for her constituents today, as @BestForBritain suggests, it would be awful if this video went viral

I love that she brags about doing weekly surgeries back then. And now she’s being told by local councils that they haven’t seen her since 2020, she just ignores them. https://t.co/S5Ha3oRBfO

Nadine Dorries on why MP’s should turn up for their constituents. You couldn’t make this up. Is she on garden leave or just lazy and taking the money https://t.co/VrBETGLSyO

It was hypocrisy in 2014, when she’d already gone AWOL (in 2012) to take part in “Celebrity”. The woman has form.

Left: "Nadine Dorries says sinister forces stopped her peerage"
Right: Nadine Dorries in 2014, "MPs fall down when they ignore their constituents. When they put their own personal ambition and do the grubby deals that happen above their constituency." pic.twitter.com/igqo0FWDtM

She also famously said “leave means leave.”
I guess she’s the exception that proves the rule…

Even the PM thinks Dorries is letting the side down.
2014: Nadine Dorries, "When MPs do fall down, it is because they ignore their constituents, do the grubby deals and put their own personal ambition above the interests of their constituency."
