Victoria Derbyshire used facts to destroy the Tories’ ‘party of facts’ claim and it was brilliantly done
You’ll be aware by now the various ‘facts’ being spouted by the Rishi Sunak’s Conservative party – those seven recycling bins, tax on eating meat, that sort of thing – which absolutely, 100% aren’t facts at all.
And yet at the Tory party conference this week they were still wanging on about being the ‘party of facts’ and BBC presenter Victoria Derbyshire simply wasn’t going to take it anymore.
Here’s the Newsnight presenter talking to Conservative MP Michelle Donelan, the Secretary of State for science – science! – and it’s 98 seconds very well spent.
Tory MP Michelle Donelan: “We are the Party of facts”
*VT compilation of Tory lies*
Victoria Derbyshire: “There was never a proposal to use 7 bins, we can’t find any council that wants to decide when you can go to the shop & Labour have never proposed taxing meat”#Newsnight pic.twitter.com/Hib1ql85xG

Had us cheering by the end of that. And it wasn’t just us – here’s just a flavour of the love people had for it.
This is simply superb from @vicderbyshire. An absolutely sublime masterclass in how UK media should be holding these truth twisters to account https://t.co/J4yVsKinGD

“I’m gonna pause you right there. None of those three things are true.”
I gently implore some of my colleagues in the American media to look across the Atlantic and check out how some of their British counterparts conduct live political interviews https://t.co/qdYg7YyENZ

It makes me hopeful that there still are journalists like @vicderbyshire who are pushing back against the mix of lies and fantasies that have come out of this Tory conference and insist on facts being facts. It’s called journalism. https://t.co/Z9C8H9Mqal

SUPERB by @vicderbyshire on #Newsnight.
Confronts Donelan with a montage of cabinet colleague lies.
VD: "They are untruths, they are fiction, they are completely made up, and they are really disrespectful to voters."
MD: "I genuinely believe we are the party of facts." ~AA pic.twitter.com/gvLJUTwi3h

And this.
I mean this is great work by Victoria Derbyshire, but it’s also quite depressing that this is the Secretary of State for Science. https://t.co/1z4KnLTAwZ
