Watch James Cleverly lose his rag when Krishnan Guru-Murthy stemmed his flow of Tory talking points
Although the big political attention-grabber of Wednesday evening was the head-to-head debate between Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer, Channel 4’s interview with James Cleverly produced a few minutes of petulance that’s well worth a watch.
Krishnan Guru-Murthy pressed the Home Secretary to actually answer the questions, rather than spouting party buzzwords. The MP for Braintree, Essex – who is predicted to lose his seat next week – was not a happy bunny.
We’re grateful to Farrukh – @implausibleblog – who captured the Tory’s unravelling.
James Cleverly argues with Krishnan Guru-Murthy live on air
KGM, "After Liz Truss budget you said changing PM would be a disastrously bad idea"
JC, "Inflation has come down"
KGM, "Was it a bad idea or a good idea?"
JC, "Labour have not been honest with the British people"… pic.twitter.com/hFWbIaAqmp

Krishnan Guru-Murthy: We’re off the point. Let’s stick with your record.
James Cleverly: Oh no, hang on, no. You went through a long history of things.
Krishnan Guru-Murthy: That’s my job, I’m asking you questions.
Despite everyone’s expectations of political interviews being several feet beow ground level, Cleverly’s performance was bad enough to draw comment from Twitter/X.

James Cleverly there not answering a single question with all the grace of an incontinent camel shitting down it’s own leg. #c4news pic.twitter.com/Cv13ZHg3eU

What a disastrous interview. James Cleverly’s tetchiness, rudeness and arrogance are deeply misguided given the Tories’ position in the polls. He’s consistently one of the worst Tory media performers (and absurdly over promoted). But this is on a different level. https://t.co/1sAPMHMqz8

These interviews with Tory ministers are getting more and more like the Two Ronnies’ Mastermind sketch.

Sam – @samwittings – had a suggestion for a different tack.
Why not just turn his mic off until he shuts up?

Maybe next time.
