Dara Ó Briain clarified precisely what ‘Next Sunday’ means and did it end the debate? Did it heck
We’re grateful to the fabulous Dara Ó Briain for taking the time out to clarify exactl what ‘Next Sunday’ means.
And not just ‘Next Sunday’ obviously – you can insert any day of the week you like’ – but what ‘Next Sunday’ means as opposed to ‘This Sunday’ or ‘The next Sunday’ or indeed ‘Sunday week’.
And, anyway, here’s what he had to say about it.
And let that be the end of the matter! Right? Wrong.
1.
Nah… "Next Sunday" is in 13 days time
— Bob Bamber (@BobbyBamber) July 22, 2024
2.
next Sunday is the same as this Sunday until about Thursday, at which time this Sunday stays the same, but next Sunday is the one after that.
You plainly cannot say next Sunday on Saturday and mean tomorrow.

3.
Hang on, isn’t “next Sunday” the Sunday after “this Sunday” as it’s not this one but the next one…?

4.
If I'm reading this this Saturday does next Sunday become next week's Sunday or is it still this Sunday? (and by 'this Saturday' I mean 'next Saturday', not Saturday just gone)

It was some manager at CrowdStrike insisting "next Sunday" was not actually the next Sunday that caused the global outage.

If you put an emphasis on the word next as you say it, it's always the Sunday after the coming one

Ah, see this is the real truth.

Looks like the debate is going to last until next Sunday at the very least. Sunday week, we mean.
Has your new show got a title?
I mean, it has at least 20mins of content now. Just base it on this. Or next.

I can’t. It’s too controversial. Just checked in and this has had 1,100 replies. And all different.

To conclude …
This is a class explanation that should make everything as clear as possible regarding the use of ‘This’, ‘Next’, & the day of the week.. https://t.co/wzhgWMjRWu

Well, maybe.
Not for me Clive. Next Sunday is clearly not this Sunday. Although would agree Sunday week is the correct term. https://t.co/31NvfxR6Xz
