Politics Nadine Dorries Victoria Derbyshire
Victoria Derbyshire asked Nadine Dorries about the ‘definition of political opportunism’ and it was a magnificent own visible from space
The Conservatives are calling for another national child sex abuse inquiry despite the last report being published just two years ago and the findings yet to be implemented (you’ll never guess who was in power).
It comes after Elon Musk raised the issue on Twitter and is entirely unrelated to the sackful of Tories now jumping on the bandwagon, sorry, raising the issue, including Robert Jenrick and – in this particular case – former culture secretary Nadine Dorries.
We mention her because she was on Newsnight and its estimable presenter Victoria Derbyshire had a question for her about the ‘definition of political opportunism’ and it was just magnificently done.
️‘if the same people who didn’t implement recommendations from the last [national child sex abuse] inquiry call for another one, isn’t that the definition of political opportunism?’
Nadine Dorries: ‘what we need to do is fix how governments deal with inquiries’#Newsnight pic.twitter.com/hUP2Nxlh6i

The face Dorries probably didn’t realise what Derbyshire had just so brilliantly done made it even better (or a million times more infuriating, we’re still making our mind up).
And it turns out there was more – so much more – from where that came from.
Wow! Must watch car crash interview with Nadine Dorries
Nadine Dorries, “I’m a victim of child sexual abuse as well, through the Church of England”
Victoria Derbyshire, “When did you realise you wanted another inquiry?”
ND, “When the call came for one”
VD, “From Elon Musk?”… pic.twitter.com/c5PShfNxIN

And here are just a few of the many things people were saying about it.
1.
Yet another masterclass in interview technique from the greatest journalist in Britain by a country mile, the amazing @vicderbyshire
Where would we be without her?

“We didn’t bother, but now we’re outraged that nothing’s been done.”
I just can’t anymore…♂️

4.
What a car crash of a reply, so governments aren’t responsible for implementing recommendations given after a 7 year inquiry that they set up??

The first question from @vicderbyshire is a belter – “when did you become aware that you wanted another enquiry?* https://t.co/O1mxGqSUnA

“We need an enquiry into how governments implement enquiries”

It makes for fascinating viewing that after 14 years of being able to do something -it actually turns out they did sweet FA and after being voted out of power suddenly have an opinion on things they just ignored for years. You couldn’t make it up. Shameless.

9.
The old term, you’re just cashing in….comes to mind with the tories, absolutely shocking and a joke by them, 14 years and they did nothing but now jumping ok the Musk bandwagon and blaming a labour government that’s been in power for 7 months.

To conclude …
I’ve said it a million times, I do not know how @vicderbyshire keeps a straight face sometimes interviewing these people. Don’t forget that Nadine’s besties (Boris) referred to the money being spent on the National Inquiry as being “spaffed up the wall” https://t.co/TDmBPjGal4
