This video showing just how much dirt is on London Underground seats will make you squirm
File this one under the heading, “Things You Really Don’t Want To Think About Too Much Or You’ll Never Leave The House Again”.
A cleaning company, mr_carpet_clean, recently posted a TikTok showing just how much dirt they extracted from a deep clean of some carriage seats on the Northern Line of the London Underground.
It makes for grim viewing.
This is how dirty the seats on the London Underground are.

Steven James, who made the video, then did an interview with the BBC about the experiment. And he reminded us that all “high traffic areas” could be carrying the same level of dirt, be it a bus, cinema seat or a theatre.
Excuse me while I retch a little.
A video posted on social media has revealed how much dirt could be lurking in some seats on the Underground.
The video – which has since been taken down by the user – was filmed on the Northern line by a cleaning firm as part of a publicity stunt.#underground #tube #tfl… pic.twitter.com/RNb8lPTSUn

Needless to say, Transport for London (TFL), who operate the Underground, were not impressed. TfL issued a statement to the BBC saying making the video “may have put other passengers at risk, because of the dangers of emptying a bucket of water on a platform near the live rail.”
TFL added that its cleaning schedule for Tube trains is made up of two different levels of cleaning – daily pre-service cleans and a deep clean every 28 days.
Still, people aren’t convinced that the Tube can ever really be that clean.
1.
I don’t need to take any cleaning equipment to know that those seats are filthy. Some don’t even have the same colour they started with abeg https://t.co/qX1DRBYn7I

2.
Basically peoples dead skin and brake dust from the trains, what you breath in every time you travel on the tube

Couldn’t believe it! Wouldn’t sit my pet pig on that seat! pic.twitter.com/qs2L6KFtRp

I saw someone eating an apple once. They took a bite and then put it down on the seat next to them. They rummaged around in their bag, found their book and then picked up the apple and began to eat it again.
Yes.
Yes they were— Charlene (@CK1london) November 7, 2024

That sort of professional deep clean on every carriage — even just once week — would cost a fortune.

people saying who cares or acting like it’s just something we have to live with omg. it really doesn’t have to be like this other countries DO have lovely and clean public transport we don’t have to settle https://t.co/S5pht8IKZm

I’ve asked TfL a question about this, but waiting for response. After COVID and with climate change I can’t help feel may be time for TFL to move away from upholstered seats. Many other global cities use other materials for seating on metros which easier to clean and long lasting https://t.co/MMILPWOmz9

Just shows that perhaps you shouldn’t sit down on the tube unless you really have to…and if you have to sit down perhaps it would be an idea to bring a plastic bag to sit on

Nothing quite beats sitting on the Piccadilly line in white shorts and leaving with black ones https://t.co/EskkTobjdY

Maybe this is the answer.
I’ve always thought it an odd choice to have fabric seats on the tube.
